Surface Design & Collage Techniques with Paper & Fabric
This workshop will offer artists experimental approaches to combining paper, fabric and photography with collage.

We will begin with producing a variety of patterned and layered papers using Surface Design techniques that are commonly applied to fabric such as batik, shibori, application of dyes and discharge, printing and stamping. The incorporation of a variety of photo transfer techniques on paper and fabric utilizing an ink jet printer will enable the inclusion of photographic imagery. Students will then be introduced to collage techniques combining their colorful and photographic papers with other found papers, fabrics and recycled materials. A demonstration of a unique process of stiffening fabric will be given as well as folding saturated transparent papers and fabrics that have been immersed in a stiffening agent to create beautiful individual "design packages" that can be combined together in a variety of innovative ways. This workshop can be 3 to 7 days

Transforming Materials
This class is designed to encourage students to experiment with Mixed Media.

The concept of combining, manipulating and transforming non-art, recycled, and found materials into mesh like surfaces and dimensional objects will be explored. The idea is to try to open possibilities and induce creative thinking beyond the ordinary. Students will be asked to try redefining and repurposing common materials to create a new entity. Emphasis will be on exploration, experimentation, brainstorming, inventiveness, making up your own processes and personally conceived methods. There are no rules or right or wrong way to alter the identity of materials with a sensitivity to craftmanship. Students will be given a mixed media "goody bag" as well as choosing their own materials to create original art pieces. We will experiment with a variety of materials including vinyl, wax, decorative tapes, natural materials, manufactured materials, fabric, paper, photographs, fibrous materials, screening, wire, recycled materials, old art samples, prints, stamps, paintings and so much more. This workshop can be 2-7 days
